Redcastle Oceanfront Golf and Spa Hotel is one of North Donegal’s best kept secrets. Families, couples, friends and locals who enjoy quality, value and warmth have been coming to Redcastle Oceanfront Golf and Spa Hotel for many years and now the hotel is ready to welcome new patrons to showcase its half a million-euro upgrade.

The hotel bedrooms at Redcastle Oceanfront Golf and Spa Hotel have been given a sleek makeover with not just style in mind, but comfort too. The inspiration for the themes of the new look rooms is taken from the natural environment and spectacular setting of the shores of Lough Foyle on which the hotel is situated. The colour scheme throughout each room reflects the soft earthy tones of this rugged peninsula and watercolour texture carpets further embrace the complexity of land, sea and sky. The new artwork and photography which adorns each bedroom has been carefully selected from local artists and photographers reflecting the connection with the local community and the natural environment and parklands surrounding the hotel.

Furniture and bedding have been upgraded to ensure unequalled luxury and comfort for guests. Dark hardwood furniture contrasts with soft leather art-deco pieces as the traditional blends with the contemporary. Technology in the rooms has also been enhanced with the installation of new Android Smart TVs in all rooms.

Redcastle Oceanfront Golf and Spa Hotel is known for its facilities that will cater to fans of the outdoors with a 9-hole golf course on offer as well as surrounding parklands. The CARA Spa at the hotel is the perfect spot to unwind after a day exploring Donegal and guests can settle in for a morish dinner at the award-winning The Edge restaurant in the hotel, which is headed by well-known chef Gordon Smyth.

Speaking about the recent unveiling of the modernised hotel Owen Mc Gee, General Manager at Redcastle Hotel says; “We are delighted with the results of this refurbishment so far. This ongoing investment is a strong statement of our hope for the future of Irish hospitality and of our continued success as one of the most renowned hotels in the northwest of Ireland.”

This is the perfect time to book your Donegal break and experience value and quality holidaying in Ireland.

ABOUT REDCASTLE HOTEL:

The Redcastle Estate has a long and colourful history filled with romance, family, tragedy and of course the natural cycle of life and death.

The beginning:

It begins with its original owner Cathal O’Doherty who died in the Battle of Kinsale in 1601.  Not surprisingly given its location, the name Doherty features in the history of the hotel a number of times!

The land:

During the Plantation of Ulster in 1607 the land was taken over and rented to a landlord named Kerry who in turn sold part of the land (near today’s hotel site) to a Collins family from Pennsylvania. They renamed it Pennsylvania Farm and today the river that runs adjacent to the hotel is known as the Pennsylvania River.

The family home:

In 1862 Collins sold the land to a local man from Muff called Thomas Doherty. His Granddaughter, Elizabeth Moore, married Captain Ernest Cochrane a British Naval Captain. They lived on the Redcastle Estate and had 9 children. The captain died in 1913 and was buried near Redcastle.

Elizabeth’s and Ernest’s second youngest child Horace went to Canada and made his living as a fisherman. During a visit with his family to Redcastle, Horace died suddenly and was buried with his father.

The hotel:

Horace’s son Richard Cochrane eventually took over the Redcastle Estate and started the Hotel business. In 1986 when it was bought by property developer Pat Doherty it became the Redcastle Oceanfront, Golf & Spa Hotel.
