Who Is Brigid

St Brigid is Ireland’s Matron Saint. It is believed that she was born in 453 AD and died in 524.

She is renowned for her associations with farming, brewing, dairying and hospitality. She was a feminist, a farmer, an abbess, and  a bishop and she has inspired Irish women and men throughout the ages. She healed the sick, cared for the poor and is known for her generosity. Her legacy as a trailblazer has inspired many feminists who regarded her as a guiding light.

She is known for her many miracles , perhaps the best known is the miracle of her cloak.  When she asked the King of Leinster for enough land to build her convent he told her she onl y have as much land  as her cloak would cover. He laid her cloak on the ground and it miraculously spread and covered the plains of The Curragh, co Kildare.  Her feast day is celebrated on February 1st, which is also the feast of Imbolc, the first day of Spring in Ireland .
