As the days shorten, trees begin to reduce their production of chlorophyll – the pigment responsible for the dominant green colour of summer. As the chlorophyll breaks down, the yellow and orange pigments that have been present in the leaves all along, known as carotenoids, are revealed. But it is the reds and purples that can make an autumn display particularly spectacular. These vivid colours are produced by anthocyanins, pigments which can form in leaves as sugars become trapped during the final stages of the growing season. Environmental conditions play an important role too. Bright, sunny days allow leaves to continue producing sugars, while cool nights can help create the conditions for richer red and crimson pigmentation.
