This year’s Dublin Festival of History will see over 220 free events taking place from 27th September to 13th October.
The festival, now in its 12th year, is an initiative of Dublin City Council, run by Dublin City Libraries, in partnership with the Dublin Culture Company.
The programme of events will see tours, talks, exhibitions and more, all free to the public, showing off parts of the city you may have never even known existed, and we’ve pulled out some of the best culinary curiosities in the festival programme this year.
The Royal Irish Academy will host a live recording of Donal Fallon’s much-loved Three Castles Burning podcast. The live podcast will focus on the history of food in Ireland, and feature the editors and contributors of ‘Irish Food History: A Companion’.
Donal will be joined on the night by editors Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire and Dorothy Cashman, as they take a journey through Ireland’s culinary past, as told in their enlightening, entertaining, and often surprising book.
Elsewhere, join museum guides at the National Decorative Arts & History Museum in Stoneybatter for ‘Taste of History – The History of Food and Drink’. This interactive tour demonstrates through a wealth of artefacts, the continuity and change of food preparation over time, and the fascinating insights dining can give us into life, society and culture in Ireland.
Have you ever heard about the pressmen who were brought to court for eating a sausage? Hear this and more at a bespoke tour of the National Print Museum, celebrating the humanity of the highly skilled craftspeople who brough life and colour to their ancient craft.
The Festival begins with the Big Weekend at Dublin Castle, September 27-29.
