Bringing an authentic Nepalese food offering to Dublin way back in 1997 – the year Mary McAleese became President, and Ireland hosted the Eurovision – was a risky enough prospect for husband and wife Shiva and Lina Gautam. However, 28 years later Monty’s of Kathmandu on Eustace Street in Dublin 2 is still going strong and has a loyal following of locals and visitors alike that travel from near and far to experience Lina and her Nepalese team’s dishes.
One of Dublin’s premium ethnic restaurants, Monty’s has always offered freshly cooked Nepalese (not to be mistaken as Indian dishes) created by Lina including the infamous Momos – steamed Nepalese dumplings with a choice of chicken, goat, corn or mixed vegetables.
Monty’s source quality raw ingredients and prepare all dishes in house, taking no short cuts including using the traditional charcoal tandoor to bring the authentic smoky taste to their barbecued dishes and to their famous selection of Naan breads.
Goat, not something that appears on many Irish menus, is a highlight of Monty’s, with Lina’s traditional Nepali goat curry cooked and served on the bone and exclusively supplied to the restaurant by Oldcourt Hill Farm in Firhouse, Dublin.
Lina is also a familiar face on RTE and Virgin Media cooking Nepalese dishes as well as running her Cookery Classes at the restaurant teaching the love of fresh healthy Nepali food, from blending your spices to creating a full traditional Nepalese meal.
Monty’s is as much renowned for its wine list as it is its food, and aside from being able to offer perfectly paired wines with its dishes, it has its own dedicated wine cellar which can also be used for private dining for up to 6 people.
Having received many wine awards over the years Monty’s wine accolades include Wine Spectator Excellence Awards since 2018 as well as recent accolades including Star Wine list 2023 and 2024 for Best Champagne and Sparkling Wines and Best Austrian, Best Californian wines.
