“The heritage of the past is the seed that brings forth the harvest of the Future

-Wendell Phillips

From April 4th to May 1st, DLR Heritage Events open up the county’s heritage treasures with their Spring into Heritage series of guided walks and tours.  Take a voyage of discovery at the National Maritime Museum or a guided tour of Seapoint Martello Tower. The Oratory in Dún Laoghaire is a hidden gem of Celtic revival art and a tour of the eighteenth-century Cabinteely House or Marlay House will transport you back to a bygone era. History springs to life at the atmospheric tenth-century Dalkey Castle as costumed actors perform an immersive Living History Experience. Guided walks of Fernhill Gardens explore some of the secrets that lie behind the various garden features amid a riot of colour as the spring flowers bloom. All guided walks and tours are free to attend but must be booked on https://webcloudone.com/dlrheritageevents

The splendid eighteenth-century Cabinteely House will be open on each Tuesday in April from 11-3pm and each Saturday from 12-4pm with tours on the hour.  Travel back in time with Earl Nugent and hear how he lived, socialised, travelled, was painted by Gainsborough, and his rise up the social and political ladder, as well as Joseph McGrath, revolutionary and key figure in the Irish Sweepstakes.  Marlay House in Marlay Park will be open for free guided tours each Thursday in April from11am to 3pm and each Sunday from 12pm to 4pm with tours on the hour. The origins of this estate can be traced back to the Anglo-Norman conquest of Ireland and the house is a fine example of Georgian architecture with many elaborate features.

The National Maritime Museum is open for free guided tours on each Monday and Wednesday of April at 11am with stories of maritime history, heroism, war and disasters at sea. See the Bailey Optic, Royal Navy prisoner’s dock and the RMS Leinster exhibits. Staying with a nautical theme, Seapoint Martello Tower will be open for free guided tours each Wednesday in April from 11-2pm and Saturdays from 12-4pm.  A unique story told in a unique location both indoors and outdoors.

The Oratory in Dún Laoghaire is a hidden gem of Celtic revival art and will be open on Wednesdays from 11am-3pm and Saturdays and Sundays in April from 12pm-4pm.  Free guided walks of Fernhill Gardens are available each Sunday in April at 11.30am and, of course, Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre is always a popular experience with their wonderful immersive Living History Experience as costumed actors and guides bring history to colourful life with archery, barber surgery and cookery. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Heritage Events are free to attend. See https://webcloudone.com/dlrheritageevents  for bookings but places are limited.
